4. Boaz Siding, the Honey Hole. - Boaz Siding, the Honey Hole, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Grade. The Blue Ridge Grade, a few miles east of downtown Roanoke, Virginia, is a 1.2% grade stretching for eight and a half miles. Until the N&W's merger with the Virginian Railway in 1959 offered easier access to Norfolk, Virginia, Blue Ridge was the last big climb before the long descent to Tidewater. The N&W kept Class Y6 pusher locomotives stationed at Boaz Siding to help heavy coal and merchandise freights over the grade. The spot was quite pretty, with a little table under a willow tree by a little stream. The engine crews kept it tidy, but there were no sanitary facilities there, so the place earned the ironic nickname "The Honey Hole." In one of his most theatrical images, Winston Link has carefully set the scene. To the left, the engineeer and fireman finish their coffee as their locomotive steams quietly behind them, while the caboose of the next train to be pushed over the grade rolls slowly to a stop. Link even provided a special lantern for the people on the caboose. It was wired with a flashbulb and handed up to them as the caboose was passing the pusher locomotive's tender. This was a photograph the photographer enjoyed because of the way in which the willow tree draped over the scene of the locomotive and men.

5. Co. F. 2nd Va Volunteer Infantry /Roanoke Machine Works Guard - A photo of Company F, 2nd Virginia Volunteer infantry, the ROANOKE MACHINE WORKS GUARD commanded by Captain Robert F.Taylor previous to embarking by train for the war with Spain in 1898. The company served in Jacksonville, Florida as well as Tampa, Florida -never embarking for oversea duty. Robert Taylor later served as Roanoke's Chief of Police in the 1920s.

7. Jefferson Street South - A view of Jefferson Street looking South from Walnut Avenue in 1915. The Virginian RR passenger station is visible in the foreground. Further down on the same side are Adams-Payne- & Gleaves just before the Virginian Rail yards.This portion of Jefferson Street was unpaved in 1915. THe streetcar tracts are plainly visible as is an automobile headed south as well as a horse drawn wagon headed north.

10. Stationmaster's office, Norfolk Union Station. - Assistant trainmaster A. E. Bradshaw keeps a close eye on the trains from his track level office in the Terminal Station in Norfolk, Virginia. The date is August 31, 1955, and a few minutes before this photo was made, the Virginian Railway's Train No. 4 had arrived from Roanoke. This was the last Virginian passenger service to operate, and it was terminated on January 29, 1956. The N&W merged with the Virginian in 1959 and the station was later demolished. A sports stadium now occupies the site.

13. Virginian Railway Station - The old Virginian Railway station, sitting under the shadow of Mill Mountain. It is located at the corner of Jefferson St SE and Williamson Road. The far right building has a sign of B & B Garden Center. The station was built in 1909 and open in 1910 as a depot for the Virginian Railway until its cease of operations in 1956. The original building, a structure listed on the National Historic Register, was severely damaged by fire in 2001, and rebuilt and remodeled in 2016.

14. Virginian Rail Yard on South Jefferson Street - A photo taken from the new Franklin Road Bridge over the Virginian Railroad tracks and train make-up yard. Rail cars loaded with coal as well as empty coal cars are seen to the left of the photo. Several passenger cars are seen in the upper right quadrant of the photo as well as several small unidentified tracked vehicles to the left, right sides of the photo as well as one at the top of the inclined tracks. One yard shifter steam locomotive with crew is seen in the center of the photo. This Virginian yard was located on south Jefferson street on the east and reserve avenue on the south. The old Roanoke city mills can be seen with its grain silos in the distance.The Virginian Railroad merged with the Norfolk & Western Railroad 1959.

A Virginian Railroad steam engine can be seen on the Virginian tracks which the bridge spanned. Bridge abutments for an old narrow gauge railroad bridge can be seen in the Roanoke river.
