Title |
Grave of General Andrew Lewis at Salem, Virginia |
Description |
A color photograph of the grave marker of General Andrew Lewis located in East Hill Cemetery at Salem, Virginia, where Lewis' remains were re-interred in 1887 upon their removal from the family plot at Richfield, the Lewis family home. The marker erroneously lists Lewis' date of birth as 1716 the correct date being 1720, his birthplace being in County Donegal, Ireland. Nearby Virginia highway marker K 77 correctly notes that Lewis defeated the indians at the battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 and drove the last British governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, from the soil of Virginia in 1776. Lewis died of a fever in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1781 while returning home from a meeting of the Executive Council of Virginia. Interestingly the 1856 Map and Profile of the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad prepared by W.W. Blackford, Asst. Engr. designates geographical features etc. along the route and in the vicinity of Buford Depot contains the note "Grave of Gen. Andrew Lewis". This raises the question of whether Lewis was temporarily interred in Bedford County. |
