On one side of the cane, "EEC.1933.14" is incised. On the other side of the cane, "AEC" is incised on the top of the boot (handle), and "MUGEY" is incised down the cane itself. 20th-century, American.

  4. Wooden Cane - Square wooden cane with a round face carved on the ball-handle, with blue, glass, donut-shaped beads for eyes, and a brass ring around the neck. Made by Ray Fisher, local hermit. 20th-century, American. Three sides of the square shaft have cursive writing by the maker. On one side: "<<< Aunt Trudy Ketchum / born on the 13th of March 1801 / on Ketchums Branch / Died on the 5th of July 1861 / May her body rest in peace, / for she sure had no peace while here on earth >> signed Joel Ketchum" On another side: "Ain't it hell to be poor?" On the same side, near the ball-head, "Made by Ray Fisher / on the 4th of March 1976 Serial No 160." On another side: "I would rather be a big _____ / than to be a _____ bigger dog." The accession book calls it #422, "May 13, 1976". The collector assigned #422.

  5. Wooden Cane - Wooden cane that separates into three parts. Below the handle is a five and a half-inch piece of lighter-colored wood, attached by brass screw-rings to the handle and to the lower part of the cane. Made by Ray Fisher, local hermit. Around the cane several comments are written in cursive. "Ain't it hell to be poor." "Weather: too warm for March up to 70° may rain." "May this cane be like the widows and old maids (not too many of these) of our Valley, always ready but never called for." "Hand made by Ray Fisher on the 4th day of March 1976 on Rush Creek. Serial No. 156."

  7. Wooden Cane that Folds into a Seat - Wooden cane from New York World's Fair, 1939. Cane folds into a stool. Has brass rings holding the seat to the shaft. The underside of the seat has the manufacturer's name incised, and a label of ownership. "KAN-O-SEAT / Pat'd. May 21, 1935 / Stafford-Johnson Seating Corp. / Ionia, Mich." The pre-printed owner's label is filled in by hand: "Mrs. T. W. Nash / 330 Auburn Ave. / Roanoke, Virginia." Mr. Sam Guerrant probably acquired the cane from Roy Nash.
