13. O. Winston Link on the roof of the Cloverdale Station. - O. Winston Link on the roof of the Cloverdale Station. In order to include the semaphore train order signals in the foreground of the photograph The Lone Star Shifter Passing Cloverdale Station, made in February 1957, it was necessary for Winston Link to construct a platform on the roof of the N&W station in Cloverdale, Virginia. Here the platform has been finished and Link is making final adjustemtns to the cameras before making the photos later that night, (inbound 139).

Winston Link's trip of late January to the middle of February 1957 produced a number of well known photos, including the image of the Lone Star Shifter Passing The Cloverdale Station, (NW1359). In order to make the photo looking down on the locomotive with the station semaphores standing proudly in the foreground, Link had to build this wooden platform on the station's roff, a vantage point from which he worked during a long rainy night. Winston Link laughed and shook his head when asked, years after making the photo, if he had patched the holes he made in the roof. But, by then, the station, once located on the N&W's Shenandoah Division, had been demolished for years. One of this series was used in Steam, Steel & Stars.
