3. 1911 Roanoke High School Football Team - Black and white photograph of the 1911 Roanoke High School football team. Mill Mountain can be seen in the background. The area now known as River's Edge Sports Complex was for years known as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. Victory Stadium was later constructed on the site. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School. Last names of team members are penned along the lower margin. Standing they are from left to right as follows:Brent (Irl Brent), Caldwell (J. Walker Caldwell), Divers (Tom Divers), Jamison (Joe A. Jamison), next name illegible, Moomaw (Joe Moomaw), Fishburne (Ralph Fishburne), Hanes (Leigh Hanes), F. Engleby, Hurt (Charlie Duel Hurt), Altizer (J. Roscoe Altizer), Gibbons (Allen Gibbons), J. Engleby, and Burnett. Seated on the ground is Gill (Elbyrne G. Gill), manager. Additional information regarding player's names was obtained from the 1912 "Acorns of Roanoke", the Roanoke High School yearbook.

4. 1913 Roanoke High School Boys' Basketball Team - The boys' basketball team at Roanoke High School in 1913. This photograph also appears in "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. The yearbook lists the team members as F. Engleby, right forward, Hock, left forward, Joe Engleby, center, Peyton Terry, right guard, Welch, left guard, with Tom Divers, George Engleby, and Henry Davenport as substitutes.. Joe Engleby, captain of the team, stands with the basketball between his feet. George Engleby stands second from the left and the team manager, Charlie Hurt, stands at the right. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School.

Handwritten notes setting forth the season schedule and scores on the reverse of the photograph mat are shown in image #2. Based on the notes and a review of the 1914 yearbook the team consisted of Sidney Spangler, left end, Clay Starkey, left tackle, Moss Noell, left guard, Frank Helvestine, center, Horace Wall, right guard, Allen Gibbons, right tackle, Warren "Pig"Hobbie, right end, Joe Engleby, quarterback and captain, George Engleby, left halfback, David Matson, fullback, and Tom Divers, right halfback. Substitutes were H. Bottomley, C. Schubert, B. Boyer, N. Webster, and J. Wright. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School.

Sitting from left to right are Montgomery, unknown, Francis, and Sanders. Roanoke College and Virginia Episcopal School were among the opponents that season. Trophies are exhibited on a chair in the center of he photograph.The names of the individuals pictured were penciled onto the back of the photograph. This photograph appeared in the yearbook, "Acorns of Roanoke".

The team played Maury High School in Charlottesville, Virginia, for the state championship. Due to a bad train connetion the team arrived only 30 minutes before the game and lost the contest by a score of 26 to 20.This photograph also appears in "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School.

Henriette Fallwell was a WW I war bride from France. She was a French teacher at Jefferson High School. Second and third year French students were invited to spend the night at her cabin on Creek Road in Catawba for Friday night dinner and Saturday breakfast. She cooked French food and only French was spoken. She lost her son Andre in WW II and thereafter always wore a black armband in mourning.
