1. Baby Mattie Hancock with Doll, 1918 - A black and white photograph of Mattie Louise Hancock (later Mrs. Basil D. Warren) at the age of 16 months (circa 1918) in front of her home at 331 Church Avenue in Roanoke, Virginia. She is dressed in a child's version of a Red Cross nurse's uniform. Her doll is dressed as a World War I infantryman and his head is bandaged. The doll is lying on a pillow and she is caring for him. The inscription on the back of the photograph indicates that she is tending to a "soldier" who was wounded in France.

2. Canteen Station near Hotel Roanoke - A black and white photograph of the Canteen Station at Jefferson Street near Hotel Roanoke taken circa 1916. The following information was taken directly from the American Red Cross website, http://www.redcross.org/museum/history/WW2Canteens.asp : "The Red Cross began operating canteens in World War I at a time when thousands of service personnel were traveling by train between their homes and camps and then to the ships that took them overseas. Faced with enormous challenges involving transportation and the movement of supplies, military authorities asked the Red Cross to assist in feeding the troops while they were in transit. To meet this need the Red Cross created its almost all-volunteer Canteen Service and opened food service facilities in train stations, on the docks, and in many other places where hungry troops gathered."

5. Red Cross Volunteers - A black and white photograph of Red Cross workers taken circa 1919. The following narrative was taken from http://www.newrivernotes.com/va/roanww1.htm: The Roanoke chapter was organized in July 1916. The chapter secured headquarters in the Hammond Building on South Jefferson Street, and opened them, equipped for work, and organized on February 22, 1917. It was the first chapter in the State to open headquarters for work. The headquarters were in a large new building, conveniently and centrally located. The use of this building was given the Roanoke Red Cross free of charge for the entire period of the war and until the spring of 1919, by the Hammond Printing & Lithograph Works. The electricity for lighting and for the electric motors and tile cutting machines was furnished without cost by the Roanoke Railway & Electric Company. Prior to securing the Hammond Building as headquarters for the Red Cross work, the home of Mrs. T. S. Davant was given over to the use of a committee of fifteen women who came daily to sew, and who, with the aid of five sewing machines, made numbers of articles.

7. Red Cross Volunteers, World War I - In the photograph is a row of nine Red Cross volunteer women during World War I. Harriet Smith Eades is posing on the right. Each woman is wearing a head cap with a veil in the back. A red cross is on the center of each head cap. The dresses the women are wearing are long with an A-line skirt with a large rectangular pocket. The dresses are belted in with a white sash around the waist. Underneath the wide collar is the red cross emblem. The dresses have long sleeves. The women's shoes are either white or black but all are wearing high heels. In the row each woman is holding to the waist of the woman in front of her. Their hair is pulled back away from their faces. No one is wearing jewelry or decorations. There are several trees in the background. The image is a black and white print.
