1. An Aerial View of Downtown Roanoke - A black and white aerial photograph of the City of Roanoke, Virginia centered over the downtown area. The Patrick Henry Hotel is a prominent landmark in the foreground with Tinker Mountain in the background. Jefferson Street which is the central traffic artery in the photograph runs from south to north intersected by the Norfolk & Western Railway running from west to east. At the time the photograph was taken the Hunter Viaduct carried traffic from Williamson Road onto Jefferson Street in the downtown area. It has since been razed.

Carlton Parker and copyrighted July 14, 1931. Information printed on the photograph includes the following: "Roanoke, in the great Valley of Virginia, is midway between New York and Atlanta. Within a night's rail travel of Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. The average elevation is about 1,000 feet; the mean temperature is 57.22. There are two radio broadcasting stations, WDBJ and WRBX. WDBJ is connected with the Columbia Broadcasting System. There are two trunk-line railroads radiating in every direction with 46 passenger trains daily. There are also 42 buses daily. Excellent hotels with moderate rates. The 142 industries and the utility companies employ 18,500 persons, with a payroll of $25,000,000.00. Located at Roanoke is the largest Rayon producing mill in the world; the largest railroad equipment shop, structural steel plant, and tin can factory in the south. Also the General Offices of the Norfolk and Western Railway System." The photograph also identifies Fort Lewis Mountain, McAfee Knob, Tinker Mountain, Read Mountain, Stewart's Knob, and Weaver Knob. Based upon the 1930 census, the population at the time was 69,206.
