  2. Delevan Bates June 12, 1893 letter - June 12, 1893

    A note from Delevan Bates to Bernard informing him that he received the maps, pictures, and circulars. He comments that the circulars are good as they pertain to both Confederate and Union soldiers. He thinks that all of Bernard's books will be sold. He enclosed money for one copy of "War Talks of Confederate Veterans" to be sent to H. Robinson. He finishes his note by wishing Bernard financial success in his publication.

    Lieutenant Bates (later a General) was appointed Colonel of the Thirtieth U.S. Colored Troops. Their first charge was made in front of Petersburg, and Bates led the colored division. Colonel Bates was shot through the head inside the Confederate lines. After the war (1873), he went West, and eventually became Mayor of Aurora, Nebraska.     In writing his article for Bernard, while describing the "Battle of the Crater", Bates mentioned Ransom's Brigade of North Carolina Troops. He stated that it might have been "Ramseur's".     Three separate newspaper clippings are pasted on a single sheet of paper. Handwritten notes indicate the clippings are from different newspapers. Each announces that George S.
