The area now known as River's Edge Sports Complex was for years known as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. Victory Stadium was later constructed on the site. The yearbook lists the team members as F. Engleby, right forward, Hock, left forward, Joe Engleby, center, Peyton Terry, right guard, Welch, left guard, with Tom Divers, George Engleby, and Henry Davenport as substitutes.. Joe Engleby, captain of the team, stands with the basketball between his feet. George Engleby stands second from the left and the team manager, Charlie Hurt, stands at the right. Based on the notes and a review of the 1914 yearbook the team consisted of Sidney Spangler, left end, Clay Starkey, left tackle, Moss Noell, left guard, Frank Helvestine, center, Horace Wall, right guard, Allen Gibbons, right tackle, Warren "Pig"Hobbie, right end, Joe Engleby, quarterback and captain, George Engleby, left halfback, David Matson, fullback, and Tom Divers, right halfback. Substitutes were H. Bottomley, C. Schubert, B. Boyer, N. Webster, and J. Wright. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School.

The field on which the players stand was known for years as the "fairgrounds" as this was the venue for traveling fairs and circuses. A similar photograph appears in the 1919 "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. The small boy seated at the center of the photograph holds a football with white lettering which reads "1918 Champions". Handwritten notes regarding the names of some of the players are shown in image #2. Based on a review of the 1919 yearbook the starting team consisted of F. Surface, right end, George I. "Pop" Vogel, right tackle, Hodges, right guard, Ferguson, center, Watkins, left guard, Edgar "Munny" Howard, captain and left tackle, Percy McGhee, left end, Ernest Brown, left half back, Thomas, fullback, Keffer, right half back, and W. Price, quarterback. The 1918 season opened disasterously, most of the games being cancelled on account of the influenza epidemic. The team persisted and won the state championship without the benefit of a coach. The team repeated as state champions again in 1919.

Sitting from left to right are Montgomery, unknown, Francis, and Sanders. Roanoke College and Virginia Episcopal School were among the opponents that season. Trophies are exhibited on a chair in the center of he photograph.The names of the individuals pictured were penciled onto the back of the photograph. This photograph appeared in the yearbook, "Acorns of Roanoke".

The team played Maury High School in Charlottesville, Virginia, for the state championship. Due to a bad train connetion the team arrived only 30 minutes before the game and lost the contest by a score of 26 to 20.This photograph also appears in "Acorns of Roanoke", the school's yearbook. Roanoke High School was the predecessor of Jefferson High School.

15. Bedouins Football Team - Image #1 is a photograph of the members of the 1930 Bedouins football team made up of former high school and college stars. The team was organized to play in a December 6, 1930, Christmas charity game against the Roanoke College squad. The game which was played to a 6 - 6 tie before a crowd of 1500 spectators was halted by dusk. It was played at Maher Field and featured unrestricted substitution. Image #2 reproduces the back of the photo and lists the names of those photographed. Team members Claude Moorman and Jere Bunting were mentioned in news reports of the game but are not pictured. "Chicago", the water boy, is included in the photograph.

16. Commemorative Medal - Commemorative medal, silver-colored. A pentagon within a circular design, with a spike protruding from each of the seven sides of the pentagon. Engraved on the front of the medal is the following: "M. V. M., SCHOLARSHIP, 1895." Engraved on the reverse is the following: "Mrs. Gilmer's School, Roanoke, VA." Donor indicated the medal was a math award presented to Josephine Koehler from J. B. Fishburne.
